Storm Area 51, They Can’t Stop All of Us, is a real event. Yes, I know. But how real you may ask? Well, according to the Facebook Page, there are 2 million people “Going” and another 1.4 million people “Interested” in going. The details describing the event are as follows:
We will all meet up at the Area 51 Alien Center tourist attraction and coordinate our entry. If we naruto run, we can move faster than their bullets. Lets see them aliens.
“Lets see them aliens“... The event was originally created by Matty Roberts, as a joke (key emphasis on the joke part), on June 27th; fast forward a couple months, and here we are now. Now, I’m not going to get into my personal thoughts on this event exactly, but I wanted to point out a few things we could truly learn from something that started as a joke.
1) The amount of media attention this event received: Imagine shinning a light on desperate issues around the world, and producing the same gung-ho enthusiasm to solve them. Maybe even using the term “solving them” is a tad extreme (but I’m hopeful!), but at least a mass amount of people could become informed; 2) How there’s power in numbers. When we come together as a society, we can be heard; 3) If we could learn to harness this same energy from a viral joke, and put it towards creating positive change, we could be unstoppable. So, why not? Why not take the eyes that are focused on Storming Area 51, and redirect them to other potential areas that could have a lasting positive effect. Here’s a few ideas:
Animal Shelters
Storm the shelters and help save a life! There are millions of wonderful dogs looking for a forever homes. Let that sink in. Millions of dogs; millions of loyal companions that are currently sitting in concrete shelters just wanting to be loved. Now, I’m not trying to guilt trip you into adopting, because at the end of the day, this is a 12+ year commitment of love and dedication. He or she is a new addition to the family, and should be treated as such. If after responsibly weighing the options about whether or not you and your family are ready for this commitment, and the consensus is HECK YES, then buckle up and get ready for your life to change in the best way possible! Having rescue dogs myself, I can truly tell you they’ve changed my life for the better.
I just have to shine a little spotlight on the OKC Animal Welfare Shelter. They utilized this viral event, and showcased some of their shelter dogs dressed in extraterrestrial gear. It’s so precious. Their Facebook Post states, “Come storm our shelter… We have great animals ready to protect you from the Area 51 aliens. Adoption isn’t that far out of this world.” I mean, just look at how cute these dogs are:
